Of Immune Boosters and Bird Flu

Ok.  I’ll be honest with you.  The thought of the Bird Flu coming to town has had me in a cold sweat more than once in the middle of the night.  I like to think I’m a fairly average person when it comes to worry, but if the thought of a new flu against which we currently have very little protection didn’t worry me at least a little bit, well, I would be a bit more naive than I need to be!  It also doesn’t help…

that our current governmental administration seems to think that the answer to all problems involves guns and razor wire!  The first ‘plan’ I recall hearing from this administration when forced over a barrel to come up with one, was to come up with a way to allow police to become enforcers of martial law!  That idea was soundly trounced when it was found that a document called the Constitution of the United States specifically forbade that.  But I digress…

There are things that can be done and it doesn’t hurt to be a bit prepared.  Number one is to not get the Bird Flu in the first place or not to have a compromised immune system if you do.

Now the following link comes from the CNN Health section of their website.  Let me summarize what I believe I can extrapolate from it and how I plan on utilizing it in my preparedness.

Bird flu vaccine

I quote from the article, (use of ‘bold’ type was my addition):

”Those other studies are looking at the use of immune boosters, called adjuvants, to try to improve the effectiveness of the H5N1 vaccine. Eventually, adjuvants also might shrink the needed dose for a pandemic vaccine closer to what’s now used in seasonal shots.”

Ok.  So they hope to combine an immune booster to the vaccine so that less needs to be used right?  Well, then I’m thinking that by taking a natural immune booster if they only vaccine available was this low dose than I might be getting a more powerful and therefore helpful (a.k.a., lifesaving) dose!  Now this is assuming that in time the vaccine will even be available to the general populace, but hopefully in time it or one like it will be and again, whatever becomes available it appears will be more effective the more help we can give it by having it combined with an immune system booster.

Please let me say that when I use the pronoun “I” that what has had me tossing in bed in the wee hours of the morning is the thought of any one of my beautiful children coming down with this awful flu.  Any parent out there would be concerned.

If you read the article carefully it does seem that history shows that very healthy people with strong immune systems are not at the same risk as those with weaker immune systems.  Those with stronger immune systems in place will be able to weather the storm of the disease.  Note though that unlike pharmaceutical drugs which can work within days, the boosting of your immune system is a process that you should waste no time in getting underway!

The good news is there are botanicals found in nature that do boost your immune system and are freely available.  No prescription is necessary, as these are not drugs but foods.  They are simply not generally known to the ‘go-to-the-doctor-he’ll- fix-everything’ mainstream of the population.

Our health, and the health of those in our protectioin is in our hands these days.  With cuts in funding for research, and drug companies reluctant to even bring new cures to the market unless they are sure of big bucks, PREVENTION is your new defense.  Want to stay healthy?  Don’t get sick.  Read Men’s Health April issue on cuts in Medicare and Medicade and the closing of New York hospitals and cuts in NHI (National Health Institute) funding.   Our health is in our hands and we need to research all the alternatives if we are going to stay healthy.  So reasearch and study is the key.  A good starting point will be some of my other posts regarding health on this blog (if I do say so myself!).
